ASUS EN7900GTX (GeForce 7900 GTX 512MB)

ASUS EN7900GTX Package - The Full Monty

Reviewing the top offering ASUS has for its NVIDIA graphics card series, we were highly anticipating if ASUS would slap on a customized cooler for the added differentiation factor from the many other expected GeForce 7900 GTX clones; after all, they did it pull off a good one with their EAX1800XT TOP edition which we gave top honors. Alas, the ASUS EN7900GTX was an exact replica of the reference card which itself hardly differed from the GeForce 7800 GTX 512MB.

A huge dual-slot cooler with a direct exhaust design ensured that the graphics card expelled all heat to the environment and not add to the system's cooling requirements.

The graphics card utilized high-density 512Mbit memory chips; hence all eight chips could be located on the front face and be actively cooled too.

The GPU is contacted by a copper base plate which in turn is soldered to four heat pipes that quickly dissipate heat from the core. The GeForce 7900 GTX core operates some 45% faster than its 7900 GT counterpart at a blistering 650MHz clock rate. As such, it is little wonder why NVIDIA adopted such a massive air-cooled solution.

At the top of the card, the quad heat pipes spread out to different sections of the huge heatsink to distribute the heat absorbed from the core, which is in turn cooled by the massive 85mm diameter fan that spins silently.

The ever standard rear I/O faceplate.

A monster card requires monster power, so hooking up the PCIe Molex power connector is mandatory. Fortunately, it consumes no more power than the GeForce 7800 GTX 512MB, but it certainly will deliver more performance at the same thermal envelope as you will see on the following pages.

As one would expect from a classic ASUS product, it comes shipped in a massive package, complete with a carry handle (which we doubt would be of use to anyone but the reviewers). Inside, you'll find the following contents:-

  • 2 x DVI-to-VGA adaptors
  • 7-pin mini-DIN to Component dongle
  • 6-pin PCIe to 4-pin Molex power plug converter
  • ASUS graphics card SpeedSetup guide
  • Drivers and Utilities Installation Guide
  • Driver CD with ASUS utilities
  • CyberLink Media Show SE 2.0
  • CyberLink Power Director 3DE
  • FarStone Virtual Drive 9
  • XR Xpand Rally (full game)
  • Peter Jackson's King Kong (full game)

Just like the EN7900GT that we very recently reviewed, we found cable accessories such as extension cables and cable converters missing. However the overall package was a tad better equipped than the EN7900GT with dual DVI-I to VGA adaptors and a very fitting game title to match the gargantuan proportions of the EN7900GTX - Peter Jackson's King Kong the game. Additionally, hardcore gamers would certainly appreciate the ASUS proprietary utilities such as the GameLiveShow (to broadcast live gaming action online), GameReplay (to record and share gaming experience), GameFace Live (live voice and video chat solution for PC games) and OnScreenDisplay (to adjust game visual settings on the fly). The EN7900GTX is also blessed with ASUS Splendid video enhancement technology that can be manipulated from their enhanced drivers and that should be a bonus touch for users who frequently watch video content on their personal computers.
