Test Setup

Our test system came with an AMD Athlon 64 FX-55 (2.6GHz) processor on a MSI K8N Diamond Plus motherboard. It also has 1GB of DDR400 low latency memory from Kingston running in dual channel mode. The storage drive used was a Seagate 7200.7 SATA drive, which was then installed with Windows XP Professional. We also updated it to Service Pack 2 and DirectX 9.0c.

As the official Catalyst drivers on ATI's website does not support the Radeon X1950 PRO just yet, we had to use the included drivers from ASUS, which seemed to be based on the 6.9 version. For our comparison, we had the PowerColor Radeon X1950 PRO, similarly on custom 6.9 Catalyst drivers. ATI's Radeon X1900 GT and XT were added as reference, though they were on Catalyst 6.8. Finally, we also had the NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GS and 7950 GT, both of which were running ForceWare 91.47. The list of benchmarks tested:

  • Futuremark 3DMark05 (ver. 120)
  • Futuremark 3DMark06 (ver. 102)
  • Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory
  • F.E.A.R
  • Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay
  • Quake 4
