The perfect fit for the ASUS EAX1800XT TOP is naturally an ASUS motherboard right? Although we did not plan it deliberately, our default Athlon 64 system uses an ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe motherboard, as it is one of the better nForce 4 boards that we have tested. We installed an Athlon 64 3500+ processor and 2 x 512MB Corsair DDR400 RAM in dual channel mode. A Seagate 7200.7 was the SATA hard drive used and it had Windows XP Professional installed and updated to Service Pack 1 on it. Finally, DirectX 9.0c was installed.

All the ATI Radeon X1800 XT 512MB cards were tested with Catalyst 5.11 drivers. While the ASUS card was overclocked to 700/1600MHz DDR, the PowerColor is your standard Radeon X1800 XT, which means that it was running at 625/1500MHz, like the reference card that we have included. Finally, a NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GTX 256MB (ForceWare 77.72) was thrown in so that you may compare the two rivals in these benchmarks. The following benchmarks were tested:

  • Futuremark 3DMark05 Pro (version 120)
  • Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay (version 1.1)
  • Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell 3: Chaos Theory (version 1.3)
  • Quake 4
