Here, we go through some figures to better understand the read capabilities of the ASUS drive using Nero DVD Speed. This is tested with two commercially pressed DVD-ROMs (a single-layer and a dual-layer) and four recordable DVD media (DVD-R. DVD-RW, DVD+R and DVD+RW).
The ASUS DRW-1814BLT may be rated at 16x read speed but in practice, 12x speed is probably what you will experience in most instances, although the results seem to favor a commercially pressed DVD-ROM as opposed to the usual DVD-/+R media. However, CPU utilization was surprisingly high at more than 20% at maximum speed, compared to the typical 3 to 4% that we observed for other DVD writers. ASUS definitely needs to do some tweaking for this drive, as this amount of CPU usage is much too high. Seek times too were quite average for this ASUS drive.
