Be prepared to set aside some mobile data if you're planning to play Super Mario Run on the go.

Series creator and Super Mario Run producer Shigeru Miyamoto revealed during an interview with Mashable that the game requires a constant Internet connection to play. When queried on the reason, Miyamoto shared that the Internet connection is meant to keep all three Super Mario Run modes functioning together and to keep the software secure.

Miyamoto - "For us, we view our software as being a very important asset for us. And also for consumers who are purchasing the game, we want to make sure that we're able to offer it to them in a way that the software is secure, and that they're able to play it in a stable environment.

We wanted to be able to leverage that network connection with all three of the [Super Mario Run] modes to keep all of the modes functioning together and offering the game in a way that keeps the software secure. This is something that we want to continue to work on as we continue to develop the game."

Simply put, there is no offline mode for the game due to piracy concerns. Miyamoto also stated that the company did consider having one of the modes available standalone and be playable without an Internet connection. However, it would complicate the connection back to the other two modes which rely on the network save.

Super Mario Run will be available for download on the Apple App Store in 150 countries from 15 December. While the game is free for download, it offers in-app purchases such as a one-time US$9.99 purchase to unlock all content and levels.
