You could soon pin icons of your favorite people to the Windows 10 taskbar

The Creators Update will help you prioritize messages from key people in your life.

To round things off on the software side of things at its Surface event, Microsoft decided to focus on people. Not 3D, not gaming, but rather features that would help its users stay connected to the important people in their lives. Yes, it’s considerably less interesting than everything else that has been announced so far, but it might just be the most useful.

For starters, you’ll be able to pin icons of the people you interact the most with – your spouse, your best friend, or even that co-worker you just hate – to the taskbar. This puts collaboration and communication with these select folks right at your fingertips, and sharing content becomes as simple as dragging and dropping files onto these icons.

This space will also serve as a communications hub for messaging apps, email, and Skype. Microsoft says that the growing complexity of social networks today means that the people who matter are often buried under a whole lot of noise. To address this, it prioritizes mail and Skype messages from your pinned contacts so they don’t get lost among the rest of your correspondence.

Messages will also appear right on the desktop. This can be both a blessing and a curse – you won’t miss any messages, but there’s also no excuse for not responding now.

Messages will appear right on your desktop as soon as you get the notification.

There’s even an element of fun here. You can send emoji to people, and they’ll pop up right on the desktop. Suffice to say, we can see plenty of people abusing this feature and just using it to annoy their friends.

There’s even the option to create a 3D cat or dog icon and pin it to the taskbar in case you, you know, don’t have any friends.
