In what seems to be the fastest update to any smartphone model in recent memory, Xiaomi just announced an updated version of its Redmi 2 smartphone that was first unveiled just a few weeks ago.

Lei Jun, CEO of Xiaomi, revealed on his Weibo account that the Redmi 2 will come with 2GB RAM and 16GB internal storage space. This appears to be the company's response to criticism that the original model having a paltry 1GB RAM and 8GB internal storage space.

With these upgrades, the Redmi 2 becomes a more compelling choice for consumers who are looking for a very affordable Android smartphone. As a quick recap, the Redmi 2 sports a 4.7-inch 720p display, a 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 quad-core 1.2GHz processor, 2,200mAh battery, microSD expansion up to 32GB and an 8-megapixel rear camera.

It's not known at the moment whether there is any change in the retail price of the Redmi 2. The original Redmi 2 is expected to cost just S$150.
