Xiaomi Redmi 2GB RAM model launching Tuesday for $179; original model down to $149

Meet the Redmi 2 Enhanced.

Mi Singapore has announced that a new enhanced version of the Redmi 2 smartphone with 2GB RAM and double the internal storage to 16GB will be launching next Tuesday (14th July) for S$179. The original Redmi 2 with 1GB RAM and 8GB internal storage has also been reduced to S$149 (down from S$169), effective immediately.

The Redmi 2 first went on sale in Singapore in March this year. It was Xiaomi’s first phone to use a 64-bit processor, and also the first to support 4G dual-SIM. While we liked the phone, it was slightly hampered by sluggish performance and we felt the storage could have been more generous given that it is 2015, something the enhanced model with 2GB RAM and 16GB of storage will hopefully fix.

At the same time, the introduction of Redmi 2 Enhanced provides an excellent alternative to Redmi 2 -- with 2GB of RAM, users will benefit from an even smoother user experience.

Some of you might recall that Xiaomi did take in consumer feedback to release a Redmi 2 with more memory and storage capacity soon after the original Redmi 2 was announced. However, that was a small run that only applied to China. Come 14th July, everyone can get to enjoy the Redmi 2 Enhanced at a similar price point of its predecessor and probably setting a new bar for entry-level smartphones.
