Windows Store Now Has More Than 45,000 Apps Worldwide
When Windows 8 launched on October 26 last year, the Windows Store had about 9,000 apps, excluding desktop apps that were listed but couldn’t be bought directly through the online store. There was even talk that this number would rise rapidly to 100,000 in three months after the OS is publicly available.
Well, four months later, it seems that the number of Modern-style apps in the Windows Store is still quite a distance away from this projection. According to MetroStore Scanner, a website that makes discovery and tracking of Windows 8 apps from a browser easy (there’s no official tool from Microsoft that does this), the Windows Store currently has slightly over 45,000 apps worldwide. The store with the largest number of localized Windows 8 apps is the China Windows Store, with 31,420 apps. The only other country that has cracked the 30,000 mark is the U.S., with 30,491 apps. The number of Windows 8 apps designed specifically for the Singapore Windows Store stands at 863.
With roughly 5,000 apps added every month, it’s likely that the 100,000 apps target would only be reached sometime in 2014. Of course, if all your important apps are already in the Windows Store, this won’t matter much for you. In comparison, the Mac App Store has about 14,000 apps.
For those unaware, HWM is now on the Windows Store too, and subscriptions can be done through the app.
