WhatsApp now has 800 million monthly active users, to hit one billion by year end

WhatsApp has hit a new milestone on last Friday - it has 800 million monthly active users and is on track to hit one billion users by end of the year.

The numbers are revealed by Jan Koum, the CEO and co-founder of WhatsApp on his Facebook page. The instant messaging has come a long way; back in December 2013, it reported having 400 million monthly active users. It surpassed 600 million monthly active users in August 2014 and was eventually acquired by Facebook for US$22 billion.

As the world's most popular instant messaging app, WhatsApp is expected to contribute to Facebook's bottom line when it reaches one billion users. Since the start of the year, WhatsApp has introduced two major features: messaging on Chrome and free voice calls for Android users.
