Western Digital's new My Book Duo devices offer up to 12TB of storage

Following the news of Western Digital's new 6TB WD Red drives for NAS applications, Western Digital has just announced its new My Book Duo external storage devices that will offer up to 12TB of storage. It goes without saying that this is achieved using two of the new 6TB WD Red drives.

Apart from 12TB, the My Book Duo will also be available in smaller 10TB, 8TB, 6TB and 4TB capacities. All will be equipped with WD Red drives for added reliability.

As befits its name, the My Book Duo is actually a 2-bay NAS device and drives can be configured in RAID 0, RAID 1 or JBOD modes. For the best performance, RAID 0 is the way to go as data will be written over both drives. However, do note that you will lose your data as long as one of the drive fails. For utmost security, RAID 1 or mirror mode is the way to go as data in one drive is automatically "mirrored" in the next, ensuring you always have a copy of your data. JBOD allows you to use the drives individually.

To help users backup their data, the My Book Duo will also come with the WD Smartware Pro backup utility and Acronis True Image software WD Edition.

Price will begin at S$469 for the 4TB version and top out at S$999 for the 12TB version.
