Western Digital has updated its WD Red series with the inclusion of 2.5-inch drives. Previously, only 3.5-inch drives were available from this series that is designed for SOHO network attached storage (NAS) systems.
The new 2.5-inch drives are available in 750GB and 1TB capacities. The 750GB 2.5-inch drive has a SRP of US$79 and its 1TB counterpart is for sale at US$99. There is also a new 3.5-inch 4TB drive to join the WD Red family. The company realized the need for more capacity through feedback from its NAS partners and customer advocacy for the WD Red series. The new 3.5-inch drive is available at US$229. The new additions are currently shipping from select distributors and resellers in the United States; they are covered by a three-year limited warranty.
Due to the always-on nature of a NAS device, the WD Red drive features 3D Active Balance Plus, which is a balanced control technology, to reduce excessive vibration and noise in a multi-drive environment. Built into each drive is NASware 2.0 technology, an advanced firmware technology that provides robust data protection. This improves the overall performance and reliability of the drive.
