When Twitter Meets Hollywood

Slowly but surely, it seems like Twitter is headed for the media business. A story broke on AdWeek on Wednesday, citing that the microblogging site has plans to produce several video series after discussions with multiple Hollywood producers and network executives. Like Bebo, it is apparent that Twitter has every intent of taking a more active role by creating and hosting its own original content.

The San Francisco-based company has since pitched the idea to a number of advertisers, with the promise that users would be able to interact with the video programs to some extent. Sponsorship deals might rocket to US$4 million allegedly, while the brand involvement will include product integration as well as promoted tweet-esque content which would run within the video feed. It is also said that one of these web TV projects might even debut this year, based on information from "sources" in the know. These original series will be produced in a similar vein as MTV reality shows like The Hills and The Real World.

It's anyone's guess if Twitter's money-making efforts would pay off, but it is nonetheless a big step forward for the company if they want to be regarded as a serious player in the media business. At the very least, Twitter will be in control of its own generated video content. And unlike Facebook and LinkedIn, there'll be little pressure from the Wall Street boys.
