Watch the Apple Watch get taken apart
The guys at iFixit have made it a habit of taking apart Apple products to see what makes them work and also to gauge how easy they are for users to self-repair. And they have just taken the new Apple Watch apart.
As you would expect, the Apple Watch is a complex device made up of many parts and, as is the case with most Apple products these days, very difficult for users to self-repair. For example, the tri-wing screws securing the S1 processor is so tiny that even iFixit had to modify their tools to remove them.
Furthermore, the internals consist of many components that are either held together by adhesive or soldered together. Not to mention that there are also many cables. And the S1 processor isn't entirely accessible at all as it is held together by resin with other components.
On the flip side, it is encouraging to see that critical components have O-rings around them for water resistance. However, its worth noting that these gaskets will deteriorate over time as the metal around them expands and contracts - just like regular watches - and would need to be replaced at some point if users want to use the watch for many years.
