Photographers, VSCO has just dropped the price of all their Film packs down to US$59. They used to sell at US$119, so that’s a 50% drop in price — and it’s a new, permanent price, not a limited time discount.

If you haven’t heard of VSCO, then it’s Christmas time for you. VSCO Film packs emulate the look of film stock, with presets for Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop.

The presets go beyond just simple exposure presets with grain thrown in, with deep changes to the way tone curves and various colors are mixed. Each pack comes with presets for specific camera brands, and matching these to your camera’s raw files always turns out best. Each pack also comes with a standard JPEG install, for those cameras not supported by the pack.

Even if you’ve never heard of VSCO Film, you’ve probably seen the name or the look online, somewhere. The company’s popularity exploded with the launch of the VSCO Cam app for Android and iOS, which gives you the same filmic presets for smartphone cameras. Recently, they even released an app just for making GIFs with retro presets.

(If you’ve ever seen a hipster-retro-delicious photo on your Facebook or Instagram feed and wondered how they did it, it’s quite likely a VSCO Cam preset had a hand in it.)

I’ve used and enjoyed both VSCO Film and Cam through the years. Even if you don’t like the idea of presets or emulating film on digital, the presets are often good starting points for pushing further work on an image.

Together with the new price however, it looks like VSCO has dropped the free 00 Starter Pack, as well as the 25% loyalty discount that existing users enjoyed with every purchase.
