VGA and DVI Display Interfaces May Be Obsolete in Five Years

VGA and DVI display ports featured on PCs and certain laptops now may be relegated to the history books in five years. According to a study by NPD In-Stat, these display ports will be replaced by HDMI and DisplayPort interfaces.

The familiar VGA and DVI ports found on the rear of your display monitor may be a thing-of-the-past in next half-decade.

This is due to the rising popularity of HDMI and DisplayPort interfaces for connectivity to HDTV sets, display monitors and AV projectors. Their increasing popularity can be attributed to the support for them from PC makers as well as consumer electronics manufacturers.

A nail to the coffin of VGA as a viable display technology is the decision of Intel and AMD to withdraw chipset support for VGA by 2015. This development will certainly make motherboard manufacturers think twice about adding separate chipset VGA support to their boards, as this will increase their manufacturing costs. AMD has gone a step further to announce their relinquishment of support for DVI by 2015.

VGA and DVI are considered hardware culs-de-sac as there have been no major developments in these display technologies. HDMI and DisplayPort, on the other hand, are being continuously upgraded and will replace the older interfaces in the near future, especially as laptops, tablets and smartphones get thinner.
