Valve’s Upcoming Dota 2 Documentary, ‘Free to Play’ Coming Soon

Valve’s upcoming documentary about competitive Dota 2 gaming, ‘Free to Play’ will be made available for free on Steam. ‘Free to Play’ is slated for screening on March 19, about a month from now.

The documentary tracks three Dota 2 players as they prepare for the first International Dota 2 Championship. Besides appealing to Dota 2 fans, Valve’s documentary may gain some traction with the local gaming community as it features Benedict Lim, a Singaporean Dota 2 competitive gamer who has been described as “a pillar in the Dota 2 community.”

In July last year, Singapore gamer Ho Kun Xian, 22 (DM MCZ | Xian), won the Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition championship at Evo 2013 in Las Vegas, United States. Though, Kun Xian and Benedict may not be common household names in Singapore, we have raised the possibility of according more recognition to their efforts and achievements. However, in our meritocratic society where professional gaming isn’t a choice career, perhaps ‘Free to Play’ is best seen as an inspirational film, about individuals pursuing their interests and passions, to the best of their abilities, against daunting odds. It is a tribute by Valve for those who dare to dream.
