US$240 million was spent on the Apple App Store on New Year's Day

Apple has revealed that New Year's Day 2017 was the busiest single day ever for the Apple App store, with nearly US$240 million (~S$344 million) in purchases made in a single day. The single-day shopping extravaganza capped an already record-breaking holiday period, with over US$3 billion (~S$4.3 billion) in purchases in December 2016 alone.

The most downloaded app for New Year's Day, as well as the entire month of December, was Nintendo’s Super Mario Run, which made history with more than 40 million downloads in just four days. Other top apps for 2016 include Pokémon Go, Prisma, Reigns, Procreate, Lumino City, Sweat With Kayla and djay Pro. The App Store is now available in 155 countries and offers 2.2 million apps in total, up over 20 percent from last year.
