Touch-optimized Office universal apps for Windows 10 will also arrive on July 29

The Windows team at Redmond isn’t the only group hard at work these days. Today, we saw the official release of Office 2016 for Mac for Office 365 subscribers. And according to Mary Jo Foley over at ZDNet, touch-optimized Office universal apps will also be generally available on July 29, the same launch day for Windows 10 for PCs and tablets.

Now, for those following Microsoft’s announcements, Office universal apps are announced as far back as January this year, when Microsoft detailed more features about Windows 10. Preview versions for PCs and tablets are already available since February with the then Windows 10 Technical Preview; and in a nutshell, they look and work very much like the Office apps for iPad and Android tablets. Come July 29, these Office universal apps - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote - will be made available for free on the Windows Store. Outlook Mail and Calendar are also universal apps, but they will come as part of Windows 10.

As shared by Microsoft in April, Office universal apps for Windows phones are also in the works. We expect these to be finalized soon too. In fact, in the Office 2016 for Mac announcement, the company confirmed that it is “just weeks away from delivering Office Mobile apps for Windows 10".

Lastly, Microsoft is also working on Office 2016 for PC, which is the desktop version of its productivity suite. This is expected to arrive “this fall”.
