Toshiba & HGST Each Announce Next-gen 15,000rpm HDDs for Mission-Critical Applications

Toshiba has announced new additions to its enterprise capacity HDDs, the AL13SXB and the self-encrypting AL13SXQ, while HGST has introduced its Ultrastar C15K600 family of enterprise-class HDDs.

With a 2.5-inch form factor, the AL13SX models have 15mm z-height and spin at speeds of up to 15,000 rotations per minute (RPM), making them suitable for mission-critical enterprise storage applications. The new HDDs come in 300GB, 450GB, and 600GB capacities, while supporting industry standard 512n sector lengths in their space-efficient form factors. The 4K native sector and 512e emulation models of the drives include Toshiba’s persistent write cache technology for improved data integrity and performance.

These new 15,000rpm HDDs incorporate HGST’s media caching technology, which provides a large caching mechanism for incoming data resulting in significantly enhanced write performance over solutions with limited NAND or flash-based non-volatile cache (NVC). This results in two times better random write performance than current generation 2.5-inch 15K drives, and two and a half times better performance than 3.5-inch 15K drives.

The 2.5-inch enterprise-class HDD family also features a SAS 12Gbps interface for reliable data throughput and a 128MB cache buffer for optimized read/write response time for reliable high-performance computing. The 600GB capacity drive’s 2.5-inch SFF, along with HGST Advanced Power Management technology, provides up to a 55% improvement in active power and 54% improvement in idle power consumption over HGST’s current 3.5-inch 15K HDDs.

The new Ultrastar C15K600 SAS 15K HDD family offers the broadest range of security and encryption options depending on the customer’s requirements, including Instant Secure Erase (ISE), Trusted Computing Group (TCG) enterprise SSC-compliant Self-Encrypting Drives (SED), and TCG enterprise SED with FIPS (Federal Information Processing Standard) 140-2 certification, Level 2. The drives feature 2M hours MTBF, an annualize failure rate (AFR) of 0.44% and come backed by a five-year limited warranty.
