Telegram, an instant messaging service launched two and a half years ago, announced a new milestone at MWC 2016 - it now has over 100 million monthly active users with 350,000 new users signing up each day, Moreover, Telegram delivers 15 billion messages everyday.

The instant messaging service became the world's most popular messaging app for a brief period in February 2014 when rival WhatsApp had an extended outage. Nearly five million people reportedly signed up for Telegram overnight, causing the app to rise to the top of the App Store in 46 countries.

Telegram is also known for several appealing features such as its cloud-based service which allows users to access messages from multiple devices. It also encrypts messages end-to-end and provides an option for users to delete or self-destruct messages.

Despite its explosive growth, Telegram has yet to reach the level of popularity of its competitors. WhatsApp announced earlier this month that it has one billion active users. As of January 2016, Facebook Messenger has over 800 million monthly active users and WeChat is said to have 440 million monthly active users.
