Synology Unveils RackStation RS411, a NAS Server for Businesses

Synology launched the new RackStation RS411, a 1U 4-Bay NAS server to offer full-featured business solutions, elevating the effectiveness of high data availability, secured file sharing, and data preservation.

For business workgroups that are in need of maintaining high data availability, the RS411 provides exactly what they need – a dual LAN connection with failover support and hot-swappable drives.

The continual service uptime ensures the RS411 to bring its performance value into full play. According to Chad Jiang, the product manager of Synology Inc., “The RS411 is equipped with a 1.6GHz CPU and 256MB DDR3 RAM to allow an average 107.75MB/sec reading speed and 47.71MB/sec writing. The RS411 is also energy-conscious to consume only 53 watts during operation.” The largest single hard drive capacity in 3TB is also supported, making the maximum capacity at 12TB. With such performance features altogether, the RS411 presents an impressive price/performance ratio for any businesses.

Running on DiskStation Manager 3.0 (DSM 3.0), the RS411 offers a complete and seamless experience on file sharing. Files can be shared across Windows, Linux and Mac and there are many ways for flexible remote sharing, such as the web-based File Browser, encrypted FTP server, and WebDAV protocol. The important data is ensured by security mechanism, such as HTTPS, firewall, and IP auto-block. Moreover, user privilege management can be more finer-grained by implementing the Windows ACL support to provide as many as 13 kinds of settings. The Windows ADS support allows for easy account management. Collectively, they significantly increase efficiency and lighten the burden of IT administration.

A wide collection of backup and recovery features on DSM 3.0 allows data on RS411 to be protected more effectively. Synology’s own Time Backup application offers snapshot and incremental backup to significantly reduce the processing time, while the Smart Recycle feature cleans older versions of backup, so the storage space will never be full. The server backup consists of local, network and Amazon S3 backup to provide a peace of mind for users, while the desktop backup supports both Windows and Mac platforms by having the Synology Data Replicator 3 and Apple Time Machine, respectively.

Compatible with VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V and Citrix XenServer, the RS411 can fit into an existing SAN and act as a separate centralized storage unit to increase the main servers’ performance and efficiency. By utilizing thin provisioning, users can allocate storage space when needed, leaving no whitespace or wasted resources behind. The RS411 offers a complete iSCSI virtual storage solution to allow for on-demand scaling to maximize business investment on IT infrastructure.
