Supermicro FatTwin Server Consumes 5-15% Less Energy
Supermicro is set to showcase its latest Earth-friendly FatTwin server platforms at the IDF 2012, happening from 11 to 13 September 2012 in San Francisco, USA.
Its FatTwin architecture-based servers are optimized for data centers, cloud computing, and enterprise IT. These servers offer 8/4 hot-plug node configurations that are housed in an industry-standard 4U rack mount chassis. Powered by Platinum-level, high-efficiency digital switching power supplies with power redundancy, these systems feature high-density computing power with support for dual Intel Xeon E5-2600 processors and up to 512GB of memory per node. Each node comes with flexible storage options, with up to 8 x 3.5-inch hot swappable HDDs in 1U or 6 x 2.5-inch hot swappable HDDs per 0.5U.
With the ability to hot swap these resources, owners of these computing resources are able to reduce the total cost of ownership (TCO) in such IT infrastructure investments.Due to its unique feature of requiring only air cooling at 47 degrees Celsius, without the need for air-conditioning, FatTwin servers are able to deliver maximized performance-per-watt with greater energy efficiency measured at 5-15% above existing competitive Twin server solutions. Such power savings will ultimately translated to lower carbon footprints for data centers housing these servers.
The FatTwin architecture's new front I/O configurations will make equipment servicing and upgrading in the data centers with space constraints, as well as to provide easy access to hot-plug nodes and hot-swap server components. The company says that its GP-GPU computing solutions are in the pipeline for high performance computing (HPC) as well as processing of large data sets from server clusters (Hadoop). Its current FatTwin-based servers are already in volume production to meet industry demands.
Supermicro is also exhibiting its other server/storage and motherboard solutions at its booth in IDF 2012.
