The SteelSeries Apex M500 mechanical keyboard is the successor to the 6Gv2
At long last, SteelSeries has announced what it says is the successor to its long-running 6Gv2 keyboard. The new Apex M500 mechanical keyboard features Cherry MX Red switches and a similarly minimalistic all-black design. This means the standard 104-key layout, with no additional macro keys or a dedicated wrist rest.
However, while the 6Gv2 didn’t have any backlighting features at all, the Apex M500 now sports blue per-key LEDs. You’ll have the option to use the SteelSeries Engine (SSE3) software to set things like brightness levels and various lighting effects, even though this is just a single-color backlit keyboard.
In addition, SSE3 offers full per-key programming, unlimited profiles, and the ability to create custom macros for individual games.
Finally, the Apex M500 also utilizes a unique cable management system, in the form of three different cable routing grooves at the bottom of the board. This helps keep your desk looking neater because you can hide more of the cable under the keyboard, but our experience with similar implementations suggests that it may be harder to get the cable to conform to the side grooves than it looks.
The Apex M500 is already available on SteelSeries’ website for US$99.99, although it looks like it’s sold out at the moment.
