Steam to Sell More than Just Games?

According to economics more options almost invariably ends up benefiting the consumer. However with Apple's Mac App Store established and the Metro based app store to be launched with Windows 8, it seems users are pretty much locked into one portal depending on their operating system.

That might be about to change if the leak from Valve is anything to go by. The mobile application for Steam displayed a number of extra genres and categories ranging from topics such as Accounting, Animation & Modeling, Audio Production, Design & Illustration, Education, Photo Editing, Software Training, Utilities, Video Production and Web Publishing.

Though the categories and genres were empty, it may suggest a move from Valve to expand its boundaries and offer more diversified software. As of now, the categories have been removed from the Steam mobile application.

Steam has a user base of approximately over 40 million users and the platform can be considered to be the go to place for the electronic distribution of games for the PC. If Valve does plan on diversifying and carrying non-gaming software, there is no reason its effective model will not translate over to greater success.
