Steam Machine Prototype Details Made Available

Valve's announcement regarding their new SteamOS, their Stream Machines and their Steam Controller were full of promise. Following up with the initial buzz caused by the revelations, Valve is revealing concrete details regarding the expanding Steam Universe.

As previously reported, a total of 300 Steam Machines are expected to be shipped out at the end of October to the lucky testers who completed Valve's treasure hunt. Seeing that there is less than a month left before those units ship, Valve has revealed specifications for the initial run of Steam Machines.

CPU: Some boxes with Intel i7-4770, some with Intel i5-4570, and some with Intel i3
GPU: Some units with NVIDIA Titan, some with NVIDIA GTX780, some NVIDIA GTX760 and some NVIDIA GTX660
RAM: 16GB DDR3-1600 (CPU), 3GB GDDR5 (GPU)
Storage: 1TB / 8GB Hybrid SSHD
Power Supply: Internal 450w 80Plus Gold
Dimensions: approx. 12-inch x 12.4-inch x 2.9-inch high

From the CPU and the GPU selections, you can see that the Steam Machines will be available in different configurations for different performance levels. Just like PCs, users will probably be able to select their own balance between performance and price.

Valve was also keen to stress that the Steam Machines will be open and users will be able to upgrade components as they please. For those who already own high end gaming PCs, Valve hopes their SteamOS enabled Steam Machines, with its in-home streaming technology, helps build a bridge for your existing hardware to enter the living room.
