StarHub has just announced DataTravel, a new data roaming plan for its postpaid customers.

Priced at a flat fee of S$15 or S$20, here are the key points of DataTravel:

  • S$15 plan: 2GB data | S$20 plan: 3GB data
  • Valid for 30 days
  • Can be used within a single country or across multiple locations
  • Supported destinations: Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Australia, and New Zealand
  • Can add on more data anytime, and validity will be extended for 30 days starting from the last add-on
  • Excess data usage will be charged according to the prevailing DataTravel Unlimited or RoamEasy Plan rate you’re subscribed to

The StarHub DataTravel plans work in Australia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand. One nice thing about DataTravel is it works with all the mobile networks in these countries, so there’s no need to fiddle with your phone settings to lock down a preferred network. Also, the data bundle can be used across these countries during the validity period.

Note that there’s no refund of unused or expired data for DataTravel. The only way to carry forward unused data is to buy a new DataTravel plan that will extend the validity period.

Additionally, while there’s no 5GB plan, you can actually buy both the 2GB and 3GB plans at the same time to get 5GB. That said, if you do need more data, I recommend that you don't buy additional DataTravel plans all at once. Since the validity period extends with each add-on, you should buy more data nearing the end of your first validity period or when your data balance is running low. You will be notified via SMS when your DataTravel balance is left with 500MB, 200MB, and at full utilization; as well as at 24 hours before expiry, 1 hour before expiry, and at point of expiry.

StarHub Mobile postpaid customers can SMS DT2 or DT3 to 6818 to instantly add a 2GB or 3GB DataTravel plan, even while they are overseas. They can also buy DataTravel by dialling toll-free number *100# at any time.

For more info, especially on your eligibility for the plans, you can refer to this DataTravel FAQ.

On a related note, StarHub also offers other ways for you to stay connected when overseas. It has a DataTravel Unlimited plan that offers unlimited data from as low as S$19/day, as well as daily and monthly data roaming plans (RoamEasy Daily and Monthly) for travelers with more modest data needs.
