StarHub is at it again. This time, the telco is partnering with Nokia Networks to bring the latter’s Liquid Applications solution to its 4G mobile base stations.

Here’s how Nokia Networks describes Liquid Applications:

Liquid Applications is about a new capability that just wasn’t there before, that is also unique to the mobile operator’s environment. Unique in the sense that it takes data from inside the base station to create a personalized and contextualized mobile broadband experience. And unique in that it enables the creation of innovative new services that can use proximity and location to connect subscribers and local points of interest, businesses and events.

Exactly what kind of innovative new services or new user experiences can this achieve? How about getting multiple real-time perspectives of ‘live’ events, such as sports, concerts, awards, and parades, in high-definition on your mobile device from wherever you are as a spectator? In fact, this was exactly what StarHub has done with its trial implementation of the Liquid Applications solution at its 4G mobile base stations within the Indoor Stadium at the Singapore Sports Hub recently.

Conducted on October 21, 2014, four ‘live’ video feeds of the Rising Stars Finals played at the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore were delivered concurrently to spectators on mobile devices, giving them different perspectives of the action played out in the court. Spectators were able to zoom in on the action by selecting any preferred camera angle at any time. Because the content is cached at the base stations (the last stop before reaching mobile devices), this implementation is able to reduce lag significantly, and higher-quality content can be served up as well.

According to StarHub, it’s still in the midst of carrying out further trials of the full suite of Liquid Applications. No time frame on when actual products or services will arrive is given at the moment.
