A few weeks ago, Sony announced that its VPL-VW500ES 4K projector is coming to Singapore in November. But if you just can’t cough up S$14,000, the company has just told us that it’s also bringing in the SXRD-based VPL-HW55ES, a full HD and 3D-capable home theater projector, this month.
At S$5,299, the VPL-HW55ES isn’t what we’d call cheap; after all, it belongs to Sony’s ES series of premium projectors. And it does come with some high-end specs and features. For one, thanks to optical engine improvements and advanced Iris 3 technology, it has a dynamic contrast ratio of 120,000:1. The improved optical engine also allows the VPL-HW55ES to achieve a higher brightness of 1,700 lumens. The Reality Creation feature that we saw in the company’s 4K projectors is also onboard here. Sony also touts the projector’s Bright Cinema and Bright TV modes, which (in a nutshell) aim to increase brightness without sacrificing color accuracy.
In terms of 3D, the VPL-HW55ES works with both RF and IR 3D emission systems. An IR 3D transmitter comes built into the projector, which greatly reduces the setup process. To further reduce cable clutter, you can buy an optional wireless HDMI emitter/receiver kit; this allows the projector to connect wirelessly to your playback devices. Other notable features include a wide lens shift range (vertical: +/-71%; horizontal: +/-25%) and a long lamp life of up to 5,000 hours.
