When it comes to televisions, 4K has established itself as the next big thing. Last year's CES 2013 show was dominated by 4K Ultra HD TVs and it looks like the trend has continued for 2014. We have already heard from Toshiba, who showcased their new range of 4K TVs and their "radiance panel". Now Sony has also joined the fray with their offerings.
Much like 2013, Sony has introduced three new 4K Ultra HD TV models. The largest 4K screen size is now 85 inches, while the smallest Ultra HD panel on offer from Sony is 49 inches. All models retain Sony's 4K X-Reality Pro engine that is responsible to rendering images and upscaling them. Similarly Sony's Triluminos Display technoloy, which made a comeback last year, has also been kept on-board for the new models.The updates come in the form of Sony's new X-tended Dynamic Range Pro technology, that is geared towards providing deeper black, more detailed gradatiomn and higher peaks.
The new 2014 Bravia 4K TVs also incorporate a decoder that is compatible with the H.265/HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) video compression format, enabling them to display 4K / 60p content from internet streams and other sources, without the need for additional devices.The TVs are also able to receive 4K/60p signals via HDMI 2.0, enabling them to easily display fast moving 4K/60p content such as sports. These TVs are also compatible with MHL 3.0 which supports 4K output from mobile devices. With these features, the Bravia 4K TVs offer a good degree of future proofing.
The XBR-X950B series is the new new 4K Ultra HD Bravia flagship model and will be available in 85-inch and 65-inch models. It comes equipped with all the above mentioned features as well as a full array backlight and local dimming.
One step below is the XBR-900B series. Available in the more varied sizes of 79-inch, 65-inch and 55-inch versions, this series features edge LED lighting and local dimming as well. Lastly, the XBR-X850B will be available in 70-inch, 65-inch, 55-inch and 49-inch models. This series however does not feature any local dimming capabilities.
