Sony Updates Handycam Lineup at CES 2012

Looking to buy a new camcorder for the family? Sony has just announced a slew of camcorders (13 to be exact) at CES 2012. We tell you what are the key models to look out when they go on sale in a few months' time.

Handycam HDR-TD20V

The HDR-TD20V is the company’s new flagship 3D camcorder, replacing the incumbent HDR-TD10. It’s still a ‘Double Full HD’ 3D camcorder, but it’s 33% smaller than its predecessor. The HDR-TD20V is powered by two BSI (backside-illuminated) sensors and two Bionz processors, and has a pair of wide-angle lenses. Optical zoom remains at 10x. It has a 3.5-inch glasses-free 3D LCD for viewing your 3D shots. Other features include an iAuto mode with automatic wind noise reduction, manual controls, 60p and 24p recording (we reckon local versions will do 50p and 25p), 20.4-megapixel still photo capture, 64GB internal flash memory, built-in USB cable, and GPS support. The HDR-TD20V is priced at about US$1,500.

Handycam HDR-PJ760V

Five of the camcorders announced sport a built-in projector, including the HDR-PJ760V, which sits at the top of the bunch. Compared to the projector in current models, the new projector is brighter (15 lumens vs. 10 lumens) and is capable of projecting a bigger image (up to 100 inches vs. 60 inches diagonally). The HDR-PJ760V comes with 96GB of flash memory, and the new Balanced Optical SteadyShot image stabilization technology, which Sony claims to be up to 13x better than its predecessor. Other features include 24.1-megapixel still image capture, a 3-inch LCD, manual controls, and built-in GPS support. The HDR-PJ760V is priced at about US$1,600.

If the HDR-PJ760V is too expensive for you, there’s the HDR-PJ710V. It has most of the good stuff the rest have (24.1 megapixels stills, 26mm wide-angle lens, Balanced Optical SteadyShot, built-in projector), but has a more affordable US$1,300 price tag. The catch? 32GB of flash memory instead of 96GB.

Handycam HDR-CX760V

Think of the HDR-CX760V as the HDR-PJ760V but without the built-in projector. It does 24.1-megapixel still photo capture, full HD 24p video recording, and comes with 96GB of flash memory and an electronic viewfinder. It’s priced at about US$1,500, slightly less than the projector-equipped HDR-PJ760V.

Handycam HDR-CX190

If all you need is a basic 1080p camcorder, then either one of the three budget models – HDR-CX210, HDR-CX200, and HDR-CX190 – will suit you just fine. Priced at US$300, the HDR-CX190 is the most affordable camcorder in the new Handycam lineup. This full HD camcorder has an Exmor R CMOS sensor, a 25x optical zoom lens, and will record still photos at 5.3 megapixels. US$340 will land you the HDR-CX200 that has a touch panel. The HDR-CX210 will set you back about US$370, but it comes with 8GB of flash memory.
