Sony Ships 2nd Gen PlayStation 4 Development Kits to Developers

Sony is rumored to be shipping its second generation PlayStation 4 development kits to selected game studios. According to VG24/7, the hardware of the kits is housed inside a typical PC chassis, with a third revision expected sometime in January 2014.

There appears to be four version of this development kit and the current one that is being shipped to game developers is codenamed Orbis. Besides being rumored to be housed in a PC chassis, Orbis is said to be powered by a modified AMD A10 APU, the latest HSA initiative by AMD for both mobile and desktop computing.

The next generation PlayStation console is expected to have either 8GB or 16GB of RAM, an Blu-ray optical drive as well as a 256GB HDD. Other standard features will include Wi-Fi, Ethernet connectivity and an HDMI for video output. Sources who spoke with VG24/7 claim "...the ultimate goal of the PS4 is to be able to produce 3D gaming at 60FPS / 1080p resolution.". The PlayStation 4 is expected to be unveiled at an event prior to Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in 2014.
