Sony comments on PS4 backwards compatibility

 The whole Playstation console family.

While we're still testing out the Xbox One's backwards compatibility and how it performs (look for the results in a future article), it seems like we weren't the only ones interested.

In an interview with Polygon, Shuhei Yoshida (Sony Computer Entertainment Head of Worldwide Studios) said that what Microsoft is doing with backwards compatibility is interesting, with him personally interested in seeing the full list of compatible titles. He's not alone there, as denizens of the Internet have been vocal on what games they want supported when the emulator goes live for the general public later in the year.

Microsoft has even set up a voting site where Xbox gamers can vote for what titles they want to see get compatibility. As of this moment, the clear winner is Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption, with 28,089 votes. Following it closely are Call of Duty: Black Ops II (25,431 votes) and Skyrim (24,954 votes). Those interested in voting can do so at the Xbox Feedback page.

Yoshida-san went on to state that Sony currently has no plans on introducing backwards compatibility to the PS4. He pointed out the availability of streaming service Playstation Now as one of the reasons why it isn't a priority for the company. "Playstation Now works surprising well", Yoshida said. He also highlighted the difficulties of developing a working emulator, stressing that Sony would rather devote its resources on creating new services and initiatives, both for the PS4 and the overall Playstation brand.

There's a silver lining though. While Yoshida-san did say that backwards compatibility is not something the company is actively pursuing right now, he did leave the door open that it might come to the PS4 in the future.
