Sony Announces New Range of Digital Imaging Products at CES 2014

Sony Electronics has announced a slew of digital imaging products at the CES 2014. These include the Alpha A5000, an APS-C interchangeable lens camera and quite a number of Handycam models.

Alpha A5000

Taking the center stage is the A5000, Sony's lightest APS-C interchangeable lens camera with built-in Wi-Fi and NFC.

Packing a 20.1-megapixel Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor and BIONZ X processor, the A5000 now lets you adjust sensitivity manually up to ISO 16,000 for pictures in fading light, and automatically smoothen wrinkles and dullness on detected faces with the Soft Skin Effect. On-board Wi-Fi allows one-touch connection with your Xperia or NFC-compatible Android smartphone or tablet. A single touch also activates Smart Remote Control, linking the camera with a smartphone or tablet to view shots, or fire the shutter from a distance.

Unique to Sony, Photo Creativity puts intuitive control over settings like Picture Effect and Background Defocus within everyone’s reach. Press a button and use the control wheel to instantly see the effect of picture adjustments on the LCD screen, with an on-screen description to guide less experienced photographers.

The integrated Beauty Effect function allows you to retouch minor blemishes on the W810, while there's the extended range of Picture Effects for additional editing. Primed with a 20.1-megapixel CCD sensor, it utilizes a 26mm wide angle lens with 6x optical zoom, and allows capturing of 360-degree Sweep Panorama shots. Also, the dedicated movie button on the rear means that it’s now simpler and quicker to start shooting HD video.

HDR-AS100V

With the new Zeiss Tessar 170-degree wide-angle lens, 13.5-megapixel Exmor R CMOS sensor, and BIONZ X image processor, the Action Cam has the ability to capture Full HD footage with high bit-rate recording at up to 60Mbps, using the new XAVC S video format. Up to five Action Cam AS100V units can now be controlled wirelessly with the wearable wristwatch-style RM-LVR1 Live-View Remote that's bundled with the camera. The remote control function also works with other Sony digital imaging products such as the Alpha, QX, Handycam, and Cyber-shot lines.

The camera's white finish helps to reflect the sun's rays, and its splash-proof body eliminates the need for a waterproof case. It has the Advanced SteadyShot feature to keep footage stable, and  can also shoot high-quality video at high-speed 120fps or 240fps with sound. After shooting, you can reply your footage at normal speed for a smooth slo-mo view. There's also the new Interval Still Recording for more creative options. The camera automatically shoots a sequence of still photos at selectable intervals between 1 and 60 seconds. Then replay them in sequence for a time lapse-style document of lengthy journeys.

The addition of a second tally light on top of Action Cam gives instant visual assurance of recording start-stop status, whether the camera’s above or below you. Easy mounting options are also increased with the addition of a new tripod adaptor for simple fixing without the need to add a skeleton frame.

The new lineup kicks off with the HDR-CX900E that sets new standards for Handycam picture and sound quality in a highly compact body. It’s joined by five other models, with stand-out features like Balanced Optical SteadyShot for super-stable images, uprated projectors , simple wireless sharing and remote control from your smartphone.

The flagship model is the first Handycam equipped with a 1.0-type Exmor R CMOS image sensor. Capable of recording Full HD video at 50Mbps using the XAVC S video format, the camcorder's sensor also allows creation of background blur in conjunction with the ZEISS Vario-Sonnar T lens that features a 7-bladed aperture. Three switchable built-in ND filters cut light levels entering the camera, for movie footage with pro-style ‘bokeh’ effects without having to change shutter speed, even under bright lighting.

With the evolved BIONZ X engine, By Pixel Super Resolution technology now boosts detail on video footage captured at up to 60x magnification with Clear Image Zoom, another first for Handycam. And with all that processing power on tap, Handycam can now record movies in top-quality AVCHD Full HD, simultaneously with MP4 for easy smartphone transfers and web uploads with the camcorders’ built-in NFC/Wi-Fi function.

Ideal for capture and enjoying memories on a 4K Bravia TV in the highest possible resolution, the newest 4K Handycam AX100E features a back-illuminated 1.0-type Exmor R CMOS sensor, and snaps 4K
Ultra HD images (3,840 x 2,160 pixels) with four times the detail of Full HD while also allowing beautiful ‘bokeh’ background blur effects. It can also down-convert 4K content.

Besides the 4K sensor pairing with Sony's BIONZ X processor, the camcorder’s advanced Cinematone Gamma/Colour function allows progressive 25p recording a warm, rich look to your footage. Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T lens with 12x optical zoom has also been fine-tuned for 4K shooting. Dual Video Recording lets you simultaneously record high quality movie clips and ready-to-share MP4 files. After shooting, just touch your NFC-enabled smartphone or tablet to wirelessly transfer web-friendly MP4 clips from the AX100E for quick online sharing.
