Sony announces new 4K camcorders at CES 2015

At CES 2015, Sony also rolled out several new camcorders, including the 4K-capable FDR-AXP35 and FDR-AX30. Both are the first 4K camcorders from Sony to feature the acclaimed Balanced Optical SteadyShot image stabilization technology, which allows for smooth, stable, and blur-free videos in 4K UHD resolution. Furthermore, on-the-spot video playback is possible with the FDR-AXP35 as it comes with a built-in 50-lumen projector. Both models are set to arrive here in March 2015.

Despite the 4K focus, there's no shortage of HD models. We’ve the Handycam HDR-PJ670, HDR-PJ440, and HDR-CX405, all of which are expected to arrive this month. These new models are capable of full HD video recording at a high bitrate of 50Mbps using the XAVC S format. The higher-end HDR-PJ670 is further equipped with Balanced Optical SteadyShot image stabilization, and has a built-in projector (25 lm) for on-the-spot video playback.

The HDR-PJ440 is an entry level model, but like the PJ670, it comes with Multi Camera Control, so you can control up to five devices simultaneously via Wi-Fi. Lastly, the HDR-CX405 comes with a Zeiss lens with 30x optical zoom.

4K Action Cam

At the same time, Sony has unveiled a pair of action cams, the FDR-X1000V and HDR-AS200V.

Slated to arrive here in April, the former is a 4K model and features a Zeiss Tessar lens with an ultra-wide angle 170-degree field of view, a back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor, SteadyShot image stabilization, and the company’s Bionz X processing engine. It also borrows the acclaimed full pixel readout technology from other high-end Sony cameras, such as the A7S. This allows the camera to read and process data from all of the sensor’s pixels to create exceptionally smooth, highly detailed 4K and HD videos in a variety of formats, including MP4 and the high data stream XAVC S codec. The X1000V also has an expanded scope of manual controls and setting adjustments, including white balance and auto exposure shifting. Loop recording is also possible.

The HDR-AS200V on the other hand is a full HD model, but it shares many similar features and technologies with the FDR-X1000V, including a built-in GPS, and the Action Cam Movie Creator software. The AS200V is capable of shooting full 1,080p HD/50Mbps video at 60p, 720p HD video at 120p, and WVGA video at 240p.
