Sony Announces 20mm f/2.8 Pancake Lens for NEX

Sony has announced a new 20mm f/2.8 pancake lens for the NEX E-mount cameras. With the E-mount's 1.5x crop factor, this lens will have a 35mm equivalent focal length of 30mm. The pancake design is slim but not especially bright at f/2.8 - it certainly isn't as bright as the classic Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 for Micro Four Thirds.

While Sony's NEX cameras have produced excellent images with their large APS-C sensors, the E-mount lacks a good selection of lenses, especially primes. Today, Sony has 10 E-mount lenses listed, 11 including the new 20mm. Micro Four Thirds has 37 lenses.

Sony will also release the 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 telephoto zoom lens, previously only available as a kit lens with the NEX-VG30 camcorder, as a separate purchase. The 20mm lens will be available in Asia from March, the local retail price hasn't been announced yet but Dpreview has it pegged at US$350. The 18-200mm will be available for US$1200.
