Supporting the SATA 6Gbps interface, the SSD 840 Series is ideal for general computing purposes, while the more advanced 840 PRO Series is more suited for serious users. Both series utilizes Samsung's latest MDX controller and flash memory data storage, ensuring fast performance and reliability regardless of data type. Additionally, the 840 Pro comes backed with a five-year warranty, whereas the regular 840 drives are backed by a three-year warranty.

With the launch of this latest SSD Series, Samsung brings the very first 3-bit/cell consumer SSD to the market. While the 3-bit/cell MLC (Multi-Layer Cell) NAND has been around in low endurance, low performance consumer applications for years (USB flash drives, memory cards, some digital devices, etc.), this is the first time the technology has been applied to a high endurance, high performance application like SSDs. Note, however, that these new 3-bit/cell MLC NAND is used only in the 840 Series, the flagship 840 Pro Series drives are using traditional 2-bit/cell 21nm MLC NAND.

The series also comes with a number of different business features, such as Worldwide Name (WWN), a unique identifier used in storage technologies, and an LED indicator that makes it easy to integrate the SSD with server and storage systems. These features are coupled with an AES Encryption to facilitate the safeguarding of data against attack by encoding all information on the disk at the hardware level.
