Samsung unveiled the list of devices that will be updated to Android 4.1 four months ago, and the Galaxy S II is one of the 15 devices highlighted. Since then, there was no word on the date or details of the update until now.

Available only through Samsung KIES, the Android 4.1.2 update will take up 1GB of internal memory for system partition. As a result, the updating process is expected to take at least an hour. Here's the list of major changes in the software update:

  • Improved Home Screens
  • Improved scrolling performance
  • Improved usability for some apps
  • Additional of preloaded apps such as Help, Google+, +Talk, Play Book and Play Movie
  • Easy mode, Block mode
  • Enhanced camera functions
  • Smart Stay
  • Pop-up Play

Although Samsung did not reveal an estimated time for the update, the sharing of these details may hint that the update is coming soon. The Korean company has been providing more information on the updates for its devices. In November 2012, Samsung detailed the Android 4.1 with Premium Suite upgrade for its Galaxy Note 10.1 and announced a similar update for the 5.3-inch Galaxy Note a month later.
