Samsung Announces New 13MP Image Sensor with Optical Image Stabilization

Samsung has just announced (in Korean) a brand new smartphone camera unit with a 13MP sensor and optical image stabilization (OIS). Not much is known about the new camera module, but the press release claims that the new OIS can correct camera shake up to 1.5°, better than the HTC One's 1°.

Optical image stabilization is different from digital image stabilization. With OIS, the sensor itself moves to compensate for camera shake, while digital image stabilization tries to correct for image shake after the face. There are a few ways to do this, Apple's latest iPhone 5S for example, takes multiple shots and creates a composite image with the sharpest possible results. While OIS has become a staple on most digital compact cameras today, it remains a rare feature on smartphones - neither the Samsung Galaxy S4 nor the Note 3 had OIS (both used digital image stabilization), while among the current crop of flagship phones only the HTC One and the Nokia 1020 do.

Samsung didn't announce when the new 13MP camera module will make its appearance in a product, but it's a good guess that they'll be appearing in the company's next flagship phones.
