Razer’s THX acquisition paves the way for VR with cinema-quality sound

Virtual Reality with cinema level sound might be coming sooner than you think, as Razer has just acquired THX, bringing the management and employees into the company.

THX will operate as an independent startup under its own management and apart from the ongoing business of Razer. It will also have discretion to enter partnerships with other product makers, service providers and financial partners apart from Razer, so it appears that the company will be able to operate largely as before.

According to Ty Ahmad-Taylor, CEO, THX Ltd., THX sold because “Razer gives us a rock-solid foundation for executing on the three core areas of business.” THX will function as a standalone unit, but as Ahmad-Taylor demurs, he wouldn’t be surprised if THX launched a few joint products with Razer.

As for why Razer acquired THX, Razer Co-Founder and CEO Min-Liang Tan says: “The value of THX rests in its bedrock competencies with certification, optimization of audio and intellectual property development. We expect Ty, Laurie, and the executive team and employees of THX, who we have also retained, to continue leading the world in innovations and technology in the audiovisual space.”

Which basically means Razer is looking to leverage upon THX’s reputation to give it more credence in the world of entertainment. And it wouldn’t hurt to release a few THX certified speakers, laptops or monitors along the way too. And when that happens, maybe we'll see this as the startup screen too!
