Qualcomm Executive Argues Eight-Core Processors are Unnecessary

A Qualcomm senior executive has spoken out strongly about the needlessness of eight-core processors for mobile phones. Senior vice president, Mr. Anand Chandrasekher said that the company will not build such a processor as "we don't do dumb things." He was addressing the Taiwanese media at a roundtable discussion.

He said that Qualcomm's aim is to provide a better user experience for the consumer by building a processor with good modem, with power saving features for an extensive battery life, and an immersive multimedia experience. Subsequently, these features are all packaged into a device that is affordable to consumers. He felt that by adding more processing cores to the heart of the device isn't what end-consumers want, or need.

On the other hand, companies like Samsung and even China-based Mediatek are supporting the development of octo-core mobile processors. In January this year, Samsung unveiled their Exynos 5 Octa mobile processor; however, this processor doesn't sport a true eight-core architecture as it will feature the ARM big.LITTLE architecture where only four-cores are active at any one time. Just last month in July, Mediatek announced its true eight-core system on chip (SoC) for mobile devices, which is targeted at addressing the multi-tasking requirements of those devices. Mediatek's new SoC is slated for a Q4 launch this year. For more information on Qualcomm's media address, the full transcript can be found here.
