PSA: If you’re buying a used Nikon D800E, check this first!

With the launch of the Nikon D810, prices for D800E cameras have dropped significantly, so you may be considering picking one up second hand or off eBay. If so, you'll want to take note of this service notice from Nikon Europe.

Here’s the official statement as shared on Nikon Rumors:

“We have confirmed that there are cases in which D800E digital SLR cameras were received for repair, only to find that the cameras were actually fraudulently modified D800 cameras whose covers had been replaced with D800E covers. It seems that these fraudulently modified products are in circulation via Internet auctions and the like. As the Nikon warranty does not apply to fraudulently modified products, Nikon will not inspect or repair such products. In addition, Nikon cannot be held responsible in any way regarding the use of fraudulently modified products. Please take all necessary precautions to ensure the authenticity of a camera before purchasing one.”

To properly identify the model of camera, Nikon suggests taking an image with the camera and then going to playback mode with the overview display option enabled. The name of the camera used to capture the image is displayed in the top right corner, so you should see “NIKON D800E” displayed if your camera is an authentic D800E.

Passing off one camera as another for a higher premium? Not to say that the D800 is a poor camera to be stuck with, but if you're considering paying more for the extra resolution of the D800E, this is probably one more check that would be good to make.
