Pokémon Go’s next update will implement Buddy Pokémon system

Pokémon Go’s attempts at augmented reality gaming has taken things another step further. The next update to the game will allow trainers to choose a favorite Pokémon as their best friend through the new Buddy Pokémon system, possibly to fill some void in our lonely lives.

According to Niantic (the game makers), choosing a buddy Pokémon will award certain bonuses to the player, such as candies when walking. The chosen buddy will also be featured on your profile, next to the player bubble at the bottom left corner. A player can change their buddy Pokémon at any time, because friendship is fragile like that.

Pokémon Go fan-sites have done their own analysis of the game patch’s code, and here are some of the changes that would likely happen to the game:

  • There are four different buddy “size categories”: Medium, Big, Shoulder (or resting on shoulder), Flying (next to player).
  • The walking mechanics uses the same system that tracks Pokémon egg-hatching, and walking a certain distances will award evolution candies.
  • Your current buddy Pokémon cannot be deployed to a Pokémon gym.

The update was first announced on 2nd September 2016, and it should go live when you’re not looking.
