Pebble announces new Time smartwatch and Timeline interface

One could argue that Pebble was one of the founding fathers of the smartwatch. Its early Pebble watch was immensely successful. It was launched on Kickstarter and reached its goal of US$100,000 in just two hours. And with Apple's new smartwatch just looming round the corner, Pebble knew they couldn't just sit back and wait.

As a result, Pebble has just announced its newest watch, simply called the Pebble Time, on Kickstarter. It has some notable improvements over its predecessor, namely the color e-paper display and a slimmer and lighter design. According to Pebble, the new Time watch is 20% thinner than the original Pebble at just 9.5mm. It also features a new case design that curves to fit better on wrists. The Time also has a microphone, so some form of voice control is possible.

Despite the color e-paper display and the fact that it stays on all the time, Pebble is claiming that up to 7 days of battery life is possible. The Pebble Time will be fully compatible with all existing Pebble apps and watch faces.

Along with the new watch, Pebble has also announced a new user interface that it is calling Timeline. It's a single scrollable interface that sorts all your notifications and data from apps and services in a chronological order. These can be grouped broadly into three categories: past, present and future. Pebble also said that the Timeline interface will be available on the original Pebble and Pebble Steel watches, but did not give an exact date on when an update will be available.

The new Pebble Time is available on Kickstarter now in three exclusive colors, black, red and white. All will come with matching silicon bands and with a PVD stainless steel bezel. The watch will start shipping in May and will retail for US$199. Backing the project on Kickstarter will get you a Pebble Time for US$179. The early bird offer of US$159 has already been entirely fulfilled.
