Noctua has announced that it will offer a free mounting upgrade that will allow its older CPU coolers to be used with the upcoming Intel Skylake processors. This actually isn’t anything new, and Noctua has long had a tradition of providing early support for older coolers whenever a new platform is released.

As it stands, coolers compatible with LGA 1150, 1156 and 1155 sockets are already compatible with the new LGA 1151 socket that Skylake will use, so consumers who built their system in recent years should have no compatibility issues.

However, it’s nice to see that Noctua is going out of its way to support customers running older systems who might want to upgrade. Owners of older coolers that don’t use Noctua’s current SecuFirm2 mounting system will be able to request a free NM-i115X mounting kit on Noctua’s website in order to re-use their old heatsinks. The NM-i115X kit will work with most Noctua retail coolers from as far back as 2005. Noctua also ships internationally, so local customers will be able to get the kits if they need one.

To get the kit, you’ll need to provide proof of purchase (in the form of a photo, scan, or screenshot of the invoice) of both an eligible Noctua CPU cooler and either an LGA 115X motherboard or CPU.

To double check if your cooler is compatible, you can refer to a more detailed chart here.
