Three years ago, Office Web Apps was launched as a companion to Office desktop applications, letting you access and share Office files from anywhere.
Today, Microsoft is officially replacing Office Web Apps with Office Online. It has gone live, so you can start using Word Online, Excel Online, PowerPoint Online, and OneNote Online at Office.com. Choose from hundreds of Word, PowerPoint, and Excel templates, or budgets, resumes, and calendars (just to name a few), all for free. That's not all. You can also dynamically collaborate in real-time. That means, you get to see where your co-authors are working within the document, and view the changes as they happen.
This real-time co-authoring feature also works in Office desktop applications. If you already have Office 2010/2013 installed, you're now editing the same cloud-based document with all the features available in your desktop applications where you work online and offline, and save your files locally.
With this release, you'll find it easier to share and work together online with Office, OneDrive, and Outlook.com. Word Online, Excel Online, PowerPoint Online, and OneNote Online are now included in an app switcher which lets you easily switch between email, storage, and the files that you are working on without having to navigate in and out of our online services.
