Office 2016 will arrive on September 22

Office 365 subscribers, get ready to update Office 2013 to Office 2016.

Microsoft has announced that Office 2016, the desktop version of its office productivity suite, will be generally available on September 22. Volume licensing downloads will start on October 1.

With consumers well served by the Office Mobile universal apps in Windows 10, Office 2016 is arriving with a more business slant. First off, the Office 365 ProPlus offering (a type of Office 365 subscription for businesses) now has a new update option called Current Branch for Business. This update model will deliver three cumulative feature updates per year, while continuing to offer monthly security updates. This is designed for organizations that usually need to wait a few months to roll out a new version of Office, or need the time to test the new features and make any customizations before deploying the suite. For ProPlus subscribers without such concerns, the next Current Branch update coming on September 22 will allow them to update the current Office 2013 to Office 2016.

IT admins will also be pleased to note that Microsoft has addressed a number of top requests in Office 365 ProPlus, such as deployment support for Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) to help control network traffic when deploying updates and new reports on Office activation and usage available in the Office 365 admin portal. There’s also support for Data Loss Prevention across the Office 2016 apps, multi-factor authentication, and other mission critical control capabilities.

For consumers, more specifically Office 365 Personal and Home users, you can also start installing Office 2016 apps starting September 22 from office.com. Automatic updates will begin rolling out in October. The aforementioned ProPlus-related features don’t apply to you.
