NVIDIA’s original Shield TV gets updated with new software and features

NVIDIA is updating its original Shield TV with some new software smarts first introduced on its refreshed Shield TV box back at CES.

The 2017 Shield TV stuck with the same Tegra X1 processor and 3GB of RAM found in the original model, and the key upgrades instead lie in the software. It now runs on Android 7.0 Nougat, and there is support for Amazon Video content in 4K HDR and NVIDIA’s new GeForce Now gaming streaming service, which lets you access the power of GeForce GTX 1080 cards in the cloud.

The Shield Experience Upgrade 5.0 brings Android 7.0 to the older Shield TV, and adds apps for things like Twitter, Amazon Video, and Vimeo. It also includes the new NVIDIA Games App, a centralized location for you to access PC and Android games.

The upgraded GeForce Now cloud streaming service is supported as well, and GameStream now allows you to stream games from a local PC at up to 4K HDR.

However, hardware-based additions like the Google Assistant and smart home integration will only be available on the 2017 model.
