NVIDIA refreshes Quadro series with five new professional graphics cards

NVIDIA announces five new Quadro graphics card, and the K5200 is the leader of the pack. The rest of the cards include the K4200, K2200, K620 and K420. According to the company, the new cards are touted to perform up to 40% better than their predecessors. In addition, the new Quadro cards shore up the K6000 that was announced in July 2013.

The Quadro K5200 is the successor to the K5000. According to techPowerUp, the new card has been upgraded to feature the GK110 GPU, with 2,304 CUDA cores. Its video memory has increased to 8GB GDDR5, with a 384-bit wide interface. However, the newer K5200 lacks support for ECC memory; while the older K5000 supports such memory for to “ensure data integrity and reliability by eliminating soft errors” on both cache and onboard video memory.

The K4200 is a direct replacement for the K4000. Like its predecessor, the new K4200 is the most powerful single-slot graphics card in this lineup. The card features a GK104 GPU that is coupled with 4GB GDDR5 video memory. The card connects to the system via the PCIe 2.0 bus interface.

Next in line is the K2200 and despite its lower hardware specifications, it is one of the first Quadro cards to feature the new Maxwell GPU, a fully unlocked GM107 chip, to be exact. In comparison to the K2000, besides sporting a new GPU, the card’s GDDR5 video memory size has been doubled to 4GB.

The next Maxwell-based Quadro card is the K620; however, some of the streaming multiprocessors (SMM) have been disabled to pare down its compute performance. Its rated TDP is at a low of 45W, and it is one of the two Quadro cards to feature only a pair of video ports; a DisplayPort port and a DVI port.

The last Quadro card, the K420 features the Kepler GK107 GPU. It replaces the older Quadro K410. In comparison, both cards sport the same number of CUDA cores; however, the K420 has 1GB DDR3 video memory, double that of the older K410.

NVIDIA has stated the new Quadro cards will be available in September this year, and they did mention the new cards will be offered at the “same prices.” Hence, it is safe to assume the refresh Quadro cards will be pegged at the same price points of their predecessors.
