The MacBook Pro is long due for a major overhaul and Apple is likely to be doing so later this year.

According to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, this will be the first major overhaul of the MacBook Pro lineup in four years which will see a thinner design, a touch-screen panel for function key, and more powerful and efficient graphics processors. There is reportedly an option for consumers to choose a higher-end "Polaris" graphics processor from AMD as it offers the power efficiency and thinness required for the thinner design of the laptop.

Gurman also shared the rationale behind adding the touch-screen panel which is to simplify the keyboard shortcuts used by power users. Aside from showing the relevant controls and keys for the respective apps or programs, it also allows Apple to add new buttons via future software updates. Like the MacBook, Apple will be throwing in the USB Type-C port and color options of gray, gold and silver for the new MacBook Pro.

Following the implementation of Touch ID on the iPad, Apple will finally bring the fingerprint authentication technology to the MacBook Pro. The Touch ID button may be placed beside the touch-screen panel to allow users to authenticate Apple Pay purchases.

The latest report from Bloomberg corroborate earlier claims from KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, 9to5Mac and leaked photos obtained from Cult of Mac. The new MacBook Pros are expected to be launched in October.
